Kevin Spencer Performs Free Magic Show at UAB’s Alys Stephens Center on October 10 – News

World-renowned illusionist Spencer, a Birmingham favourite, is a leader in physical and psychosocial rehabilitation using the therapeutic benefits of magic tricks. This show is also a sensory performance.

Kevin SpencerExperience the magic of illusionist Kevin Spencer in a free show on Sunday, October 10, presented by the University of Alabama at the Institute for Arts in Medicine in Birmingham.

Spencer, a Birmingham favourite, is a world-renowned illusionist and a leader in physical and psychosocial rehabilitation using the therapeutic benefits of magic tricks. An award-winning teaching artist, researcher, consultant, speaker, program designer and film producer, Spencer believes in creating inclusive communities where everyone feels a genuine sense of belonging and no one is relegated to the margins.

Her entertaining show features storytelling, stage magic and audience participation. Spencer is widely considered the leading authority on the therapeutic use of magic tricks in special education and rehabilitation. He developed the UAB Magic Camp, a collaboration between the occupational therapy department of the UAB School of Health Professions, Children’s of Alabama, Hocus Focus™ and UAB occupational therapy students, who are trained in Spencer’s protocol and provide instructions to campers.

This free 2 p.m. show at UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center is also an inclusive sensory performance. Although the show is free, each participant must register online. Call the ASC box office at 205-975-2787, or for the most up-to-date information, visit AlysStephens.org.

Due to capacity restrictions, registration does not guarantee admission, and admission/seating will be general admission, first come first served. Everyone in a party must enter the room at the same time to be seated together. Due to COVID protocol, it is not permitted to reserve seats.

The pandemic is a fluid situation that the UAB is monitoring, in consultation with infectious disease and public health experts; performance will be subject to change based on the latest COVID-19 safety guidelines. Event staff and attendees are required to wear masks inside campus, regardless of vaccination status, as well as maintain appropriate distancing on the UAB campus, including during events.
