In a battle between two of the West Region’s top teams, the Minot Magicians (9-7-1 overall, 8-4 West Region) and the Bismarck Legacy Sabers (12-6 overall, 10-4 West Region) are faced. at Corbett Field. The Sabers enter the day in second place, followed by the Magicians in third.
Minot is looking to bounce back from back-to-back losses to Williston, while Bismarck Legacy is coming off a back-to-back win over Bismarck Century. With the Western Region tournament on the horizon, every game matters for the Magi as they near the conclusion of a shortened spring season against teams they will see again in regional play.
In the first leg of the doubleheader, Minot’s Tyler Buchanan and Bismarck Legacy’s Wyatt Kraft treated the Corbett Field crowd to what took the form of a pitching duel, with both teams held scoreless until the end. third inning.
It was the Sabers who struck first, using rallies in the third and fourth innings to take a 3-0 lead over the Magicians. The script was reversed in the sixth inning, as the Sabers continued to build up, making it a 6-0 game.
The Magicians struggled at the plate early on, but they managed to get back on their feet by scoring three runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning. The three points were all Minot could muster in Game 1, as they lost to Bismarck Legacy 6-3.
Tyler Collins, Tyler Johnson and Carter Mowbray led the way for the Magicians in the first leg, as the trio completed one point apiece. Hunter Horner relieved Buchanan from the bullpen, where he kept the Sabers hitless for one and two-thirds of an inning.
For Bismarck Legacy, Lucas Vasey led the way by going 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs. Isaac Pegors also contributed, going 2 for 4 with an RBI.
Game 2 featured more of a first offense from both teams. Bismarck Legacy had back-to-back triples to start the game, eventually taking a 2-0 lead over Minot. Once again, the Magicians found themselves playing from behind.
The Magicians didn’t let the first hole phase them, however, as they quickly tied the game and held the shots taking a 5-2 lead over the Sabers late in the first.
The first wave was led by Kellan Burke who had a double RBI, Jonas Bubach who had an RBI single and Adam Roedocker who led in two on a triple.
After a back-and-forth battle that saw the Magicians hold on to a 5-3 lead, both teams cooled off throughout the middle innings of the game. Right-hander Carson Deaver started for the Magicians and kept Sabers damage to a minimum after the first wave.
The Sabers had a late rally, scoring two runs to tie the game in the top of the seventh. The eventual winning run came home on a backhand in the same frame, as the Sabers stunned the Magicians in a 6-5 win from behind.
The Magicians were led by Burke who went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI, Roedocker who went 1 for 3 with a triple and two RBI, and Bubach who went 1 for 3 with an RBI.
For the Sabers in Game 2, Vasey continued his good day by going 3 for 4 with two triples, Marcus Butts went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI, and Luke Welk went 1 for 2 with two RBIs. to pave the way for the road crew.
Next up for the Magicians will be another conference game as they face top-seeded Dickinson on Thursday, May 19 at Corbett Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
